Stock and Security Donations

Canada’s tax incentives for charitable donations are designed to make it easier to you to support Project SHARE. How you structure your charitable donations can be as important as the amounts you give, both to the charity and to the donation’s after-tax cost you. Individuals and corporations who donate securities listed on prescribed stock exchanges, mutual funds and segregated funds of life insurance companies to charities do not have to include any portion of the resulting capital gain in their income. Simply have your investment account holder contact Project SHARE to arrange for transfer. A receipt will be issued for the value as of the day it is received.

Leave a Legacy

LEAVE A LEGACY™ is a national public awareness program designed to encourage people to leave a gift through their will or any other gift planning instrument to a charity or non-profit organization of their choice. LEAVE A LEGACY™ does not solicit gifts for any particular organization. LEAVE A LEGACY™ is a donor-oriented education campaign to raise awareness of the importance of including a charitable gift in the estate planning process. A legacy gift can benefit all not-for-profit groups large or small.

Through the generous corporate support from Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life, the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP-ACPDP™) has been able to advance this community-based initiative. The LEAVE A LEGACY™ program allows supporters to become involved in a philanthropic movement and raises awareness of the importance of planned charitable gifts in our society. Leaving a planned gift in your will is like sowing a seed. The Canada-wide program involves the collaborative teamwork of goal driven volunteers and communities who all recognize that a seed sown today reaps a harvest tomorrow.

The LEAVE A LEGACY™ goal of advancing philanthropy is supported by federal government legislation. By implementing a legislation that allows Canadians to claim donations and other benefits in their taxes, the federal government encourages an increase of gifts to charities from individuals and corporations. Statistics Canada reports that, in 2006, 25% of Canadians filling tax returns claimed a charitable donation. These claims totaled $8.5 billion. Significant tax incentives make gift planning even more attractive, particularly for those gifts left in a will. By making it easier to leave a gift, the federal government through its beneficiary legislation helps to promote the LEAVE A LEGACY™ program message, and allows Canada to continue its rich history of giving.

81% of Canadians contribute to charitable organizations throughout their lifetime. However, research shows that only 7% continue this support through a gift in their will or estate plan. The intended result of LEAVE A LEGACY™ is to increase the number of planned gifts from donors to charitable organizations. By making a charitable gift as part of an overall estate plan, individuals can continue to help organizations that are making an important difference in their community. When we leave a gift, we ensure that help continues to be there for those who need it.

Food Donations

Food procurement is done daily at Project SHARE with staff consistently reaching out to the community requesting their support. On average, 350 pounds of emergency food is distributed each hour to families in need at Project SHARE. This amounts to over 700,000 pounds of food a year. If each resident of Niagara Falls donated ¾ of a pound of food each month, Project SHARE would b e able to sustain their food bank without seeking any other assistance. Most importantly, essential items like peanut butter and formula for babies are hard to come by due to the high level of cost.

You can ease the strain by making a food donation and encouraging others to do so. Participating grocery stores are equipped with food drive barrels all year round to make donating food as easy as possible.

Participating food drop-off locations:

  • - Chippawa Foodland
  • - Niagara Falls Foodland
  • - Food Basics
  • - Ron’s No Frills
  • - Commisso’s Fresh Foods
  • - Sobeys
  • - Metro
  • - Sunstrum’s Florist
  • - Giant Tiger
  • - Zehrs Food Plus

Over 41% of the food that is donated to Project SHARE comes from outside of the Niagara Region. Within our area, we do conduct a city-wide food drive each year, and community members also conduct other food events on our behalf throughout the year.

Items donated should have nutritious value. Some clients may be homeless or living at a motel. For these situations, foods that are easy to make or ready to eat are required.

Traditionally, the items we need most are:

  • baby formula

  • bottled juice

  • canned pasta

  • dry pasta

  • macaroni and cheese

  • peanut butter

  • tuna

  • toiletries

  • canned soups

  • canned vegetables

We do have refrigerator and freezer storage space for perishable items such as:

  • fresh fruits

  • fresh vegetables

  • milk

  • other dairy products

  • frozen foods

The average cost to feed a family of four. Including a baby, each day is about $70. The Ontario Association of Food Banks reports that, during 2009, the price of many items on the grocery lists of families across Ontario increased by over 10%. These items included milk, peanut butter, pasta, flour, canned soup, baby food, and potatoes.

Kindly check expiry dates on items you are donating. We strictly follow the guidelines of the Public Health Department that restrict us from distributing out-of-date food. Having to handle and dispose of out-of-date food items increases our costs, using funds that could be better spent to help people through our programs.

Because we strictly follow the guidelines of the Public Health Department we are restrict from distributing food items in dented cans or in packages that have been torn or damaged.

Charitable receipts can be issued with proof of purchase of donated food.
