Out of the Cold
Last year, 625 people were experiencing homelessness in the Niagara region. As affordable housing decreases within the Niagara Region, the number of individuals without stable housing continues to increase every year.
In past years homeless individuals in Niagara Falls have been transported to St. Catharines’ Out of the Cold overnight shelter, but due to overwhelming need this winter the Niagara Region will be running a pilot project at St. Andrew’s Church in Niagara Falls.
This year, Project SHARE and St. Andrew’s United Church will be providing overnight shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness in Niagara Falls from November 1st to March 31st.
Individuals in need of shelter will be able to stay for as many nights as needed within this time frame. Guests will enter the church at 7:00 p.m. and exit at 7:00 a.m. and receive light refreshments during this time.
As some of the most isolated members within in our community, it is important that alongside food and shelter we also provide compassion and understanding.
We are looking for volunteers to assist staff with registration, logistics, and offering companionship from 7pm through 11pm. Volunteers are asked to dedicate 1 night of availability per week. Modifications can be made if necessary.
Individuals interested in working in the human sector or emergency services upon graduation would gain much experience and knowledge in this volunteer placement while working within a safe and supported environment equip with trained staff.
Those who wish to volunteer can obtain further information by reaching out to email@example.com or by phone at (905) 357- 5121 ext. 23.
